If you would like to watch our information evening about labour and birth right now, we are happy to send you a recording of the latest online information evening, in Dutch or English. Recommended for everyone from about 30 weeks of pregnancy. Send an email to the assistant if you wish.

In addition, at 34-36 weeks we are happy to schedule extra time during the consultation hour to go through the birth information individually. If you still have questions or a birth plan, this is a good moment to discuss them with each other.

From week 13 to 24 of your pregnancy, you are always welcome at the walk-in ‘heartbeat consultation’ hours. Does the time between appointments feel too long, and would you just like to hear your baby’s heartbeat in between check-ups? You can come by.

We offer walk-in heartbeat consultation hours on Tuesdays (location Amstelveen, Kamillelaan) and Thursdays (location Amsterdam Buitenveldert) from 2:45 to 3:15pm. We kindly request that you email the assistant beforehand that you will be coming.

Hereby we would like to inform you about choices concerning your health insurance in the new year.

We would like to inform you, that we can take care of you in 2025 with every health insurance. We have an agreement with all Dutch health insurance companies, directly or through the Verloskundige Zorggroep Groot Amsterdam. As a result, you may not find our name in the online ‘Zorgzoeker’.

Obstetric care is part of the basic health insurance package, which means that our obstetric care and all medical ultrasounds are reimbursed. There may be other costs around the pregnancy for which you have to pay a personal contribution: for example costs for a birth in the hospital without a medical indication, a contribution to maternity care, costs for a lactation consultant and for contraception. You can take out an additional insurance for this. We recommend that you check your policy, so that you can make a choice which is best for you.

Whooping cough is a very serious disease for newborn babies. By having yourself vaccinated during pregnancy, your baby is protected against whooping cough right from birth. The 22-week vaccin is, from December 16, part of the national vaccination program and it is available for free.

When and where?

You can get the vaccination from the 22nd week until the end of the pregnancy, from December 16. The sooner the better. By vaccinating early, there is enough time to transfer antibodies to your baby.

The injection is given at each youth health centre/GGD (‘consultatiebureau’). In our region, there are walk-in hours.

De beroepsverenigingen van verloskundigen (KNOV) en gynaecologen (NVOG) vinden het begrijpelijk dat het onderzoek is gestopt, maar moeten het nog zorgvuldig bestuderen om conclusies te trekken. Er zijn veel studies op dit vlak die een divers beeld geven, waardoor over wel of niet inleiden, nog geen eenduidige conclusie is te trekken. De KNOV en NVOG trekken hierin samen op om deze uitkomsten naar de praktijk te vertalen. Zij gaan o.a. gezamenlijk de richtlijn herzien en een keuzehulp maken voor vrouwen die 41 weken zwanger zijn. Daarmee kunnen de vrouwen een goed geïnformeerde afweging maken of ze ingeleid willen worden of willen afwachten.

Inleiden, voor en nadelen goed bespreken

We zijn geschrokken van de sterftes in het Zweedse onderzoek. Het is te begrijpen dat de eerste reflex is om alle zwangeren een inleiding aan te bieden bij 41 weken. Toch is het de vraag of dat het beste is.

Inleidingen hebben ook nadelen. De meeste vrouwen willen het liever niet; in het Zweedse onderzoek wilden 78% van vrouwen niet meedoen en in de Nederlandse Index studie 59%. Het is dus de vraag of de resultaten van deze studies van toepassing zijn op de hele groep vrouwen die 41 weken zwanger zijn. De weeën zijn vaak pijnlijker zodat vrouwen vaker pijnbestrijding nodig hebben; in de Zweedse trial hadden meer vrouwen een ruggenprik. Ook zijn er aanwijzingen dat kinderen 5 jaar na de geboorte meer gezondheidsproblemen hebben, zoals infecties.

De voor- en nadelen moeten dus goed worden afgewogen. Daarbij is het niet alleen belangrijk dat een kind gezond is bij de geboorte, maar ook op latere leeftijd. En het is belangrijk dat een vrouw gezond is en goed terug kijkt op de bevalling.

Van alle zwangeren wordt nu al meer dan 1 op de 5 ingeleid. In Nederland bevallen minder vrouwen na 42 weken (1.3%) dan in Finland (4%) terwijl de babysterfte in Finland lager is. Meer vrouwen inleiden zal maar weinig invloed hebben op de babysterfte in Nederland.

Meer dan driekwart van alle sterftes vindt plaats onder vroeggeboren kinderen. Het aantal vroeggeboorten in Nederland is hoog (6.9%) vergeleken met Finland (5.2%). Hier is dus winst te halen. Preventie is hiervoor belangrijk, bijvoorbeeld door vrouwen te helpen om te stoppen met roken en een gezonde leefstijl aan te nemen. Daarnaast leidt begeleiding door een klein team vertrouwde zorgverleners tijdens het hele traject van een kind krijgen tot een kwart minder vroeggeboortes.

This month we have started a new CenteringPregnancy group!

CenteringPregnancy® is an exciting way for women and their families to get prenatal care. Compared to traditional care, women spend more time with their health care provider and with other pregnant women, which gives them a chance to learn a lot more about pregnancy, childbirth, and parenting.

Medical check-ups, support, and education all take place in a group setting, with 10 to 12 other women all due around the same time.

Numerous scientific studies have shown that taking part in CenteringPregnancy meetings improves the outcome of your pregnancy and gives you more self-confidence during pregnancy, childbirth and in your new role as a mother.

We are very excited about this program. It includes the three key pillars of care: research, information and support.

In recent years whooping cough has become increasingly common. Whooping cough is an infectious lung disease that is particularly dangerous in babies who have not, or not fully, been vaccinated against it. Babies can only be vaccinated once they are six weeks old. The Health Council of the Netherlands therefore recommends that pregnant women should be offered a whooping cough vaccination in the third trimester, i.e. between 28 and 32 weeks.

The antibodies the mother produces will pass through the umbilical cord to the unborn baby. This gives the baby antibodies to combat whooping cough right from birth and will protect it against the disease in the first months of life. The Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment, RIVM, is currently investigating how to arrange this vaccination for pregnant women. Until the scheme is implemented nationally, pregnant women can choose to be vaccinated against whooping cough, but they will have to pay for it themselves.

You can be vaccinated by your family doctor or you can go to the Public Health Service of Amsterdam (GGD). If you wish to be vaccinated at the GGD, you can make an appointment online with the Travellers’ advice and vaccination office. There is space on the form to indicate that the vaccination is not for a trip abroad by checking the option “other” (“Overige”). You can make your appointment online (in Dutch).

En de politiek is het ermee eens. Nog dit jaar komt minister Hugo de Jonge met plannen om te investeren in de allerjongsten. Tessa Roseboom legt je uit waarom die eerste duizend dagen zo belangrijk zijn.

Would you like to know the gender of the baby and you can’t wait until the 20-week ultrasound? We are happy to perform a gender scan from 16 weeks of pregnancy for our clients. This ultrasound is not covered by insurance. The cost is 40 euro.
